The Tapanuli orangutan is the most endangered great ape with a population of less than 800 due to habitat destruction caused by deforestation from mining, agriculture, and logging. The construction of a Chinese-backed hydroelectric dam project is further endangering their survival by fragmenting their habitat and cutting off connectivity between population groups. Despite opposition from locals and conservation groups, the dam project is still under construction, pushing the Tapanuli orangutan closer to extinction.
